In 2023, the Census Bureau reported about 16 million Veterans in the U.S. More than 1.7 million Veterans are women. The Veteran population is aging, with about half of the Veterans being 65 or older. The Veterans Administration (VA) reports 136,333 Veterans in Utah, with 61,771 being age 65 and over. Veterans constitute 5.1% of the adult population. A large portion of today's Veterans served in the Gulf War eras (August 1990-August 2001 and September 2001-present).
Research published by the PEW Research Institute revealed that Americans express feelings of pride and gratitude about Veterans and the Armed Forces. At the same time, most Americans acknowledge they know little about the realities of military service or the problems faced by those in the military or their sacrifices. Most Americans are also glad their people are willing to serve in the military but would discourage family members from joining.
Since November 2023, the RMVC has proudly welcomed over 6,000 visitors to the center. Of these over 2,000 were Veterans. Over 500 Veterans met with our guest Veterans Service Officer (VSO) for assistance with filing VA disability benefit claims. There are over 16,000 Veterans living in the Cache Valley Area.
We encourage all to stop by the RMVC on Veterans Day to enjoy a hot dog, refreshments, and register for door prizes provided by local businesses. “Music by Marly” will provide the entertainment. Shanna Anderson, a Bear River Association of Governments VSO and social worker, will be available to assist Veterans in filing VA benefit claims and answering questions regarding benefits. Sponsors for this year's event are Lee’s Marketplace, Pepsi, Thermo-Fisher Scientific, and the RMVC Home Care Team.
