After an absence of more than five years, SHANGHAI BALLET makes its return to North America with The Butterfly Lovers, a spectacular full-length ballet inspired by one of China’s most beloved traditional legends. Sometimes compared to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story follows two young people whose love defies the expectations and restrictions of their society before their journey takes a magical turn, transforming them into butterflies.

Artistic Director Xin Lili brings this celebrated tale to the stage through a unique combination of classical ballet and Chinese artistic traditions. Elaborate costumes, colorful scenery, and graceful, emotionally expressive movement bring the story’s romance and drama to life. Featuring Shanghai Ballet’s talented ensemble, The Butterfly Lovers offers audiences an extraordinary opportunity to experience the beauty of Chinese culture and the artistry of one of the country’s renowned ballet companies.
